Natural Attractions in Iceland

Iceland, which is a volcanic island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean, is a land of realistic contrast of climate, geography and culture.

It has a size of 102,000 square kilometers and it is 1000km away from the European mainland and 300km away from the coast of Greenland. Iceland has appeared about 20 million years ago, from an underwater mountain range (the mid-Atlantic Ridge). The island is full of lava fields, geysers and hot pools.

It is also the land of glaciers, because Vatnajökull, which is the biggest ice sheet in Iceland and also in Europe, covers an area of 8,000 square kilometers of Iceland. Also, there are 269 glaciers which are named. They are: Langjökull, Mydalsjökull, Drangajökull and 266 more.

Iceland's climate is warmer than any land near the Arctic circle. Due to the Gulf Stream-which comes from North America- flowing around the southern coast of Iceland, winters are warmer and summers can be rainy.

However, by reason of the cool summer, the farmers could not grow crops(plant that can be grown and harvested extensively for profit). Instead, they made a living by raising sheep and cattle.

Iceland's economy profits are from thousands of tourists who come to see its natural attractions.
